Male Infertilities New Genetic Factor
It has been quite a few months since I have posted any new information about infertility. So I figured that now was as good a day as any to get back on my writing horse jump back in to the fight against infertility. With that said I thought a new post about the latest information about male infertility would be a good place to start today.
It actually did not take long for me to find some interesting breaking news about infertility in general but it was a PR headline about a new discovery in the genetic factor for infertility for men that got my attention today.
Let me give you a quick breakdown of what I got out of the article. A study ( I know great another study of speculation on findings, oh joy!) that can be found online at the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences did research on mice and discovered a protein that is essential to the male fertility process. The PR goes on with some technical descriptions of what this essential protein they refer to it as MEIG1, I know riveting stuff right ![]()
There were two other things in the article that I thought were of interest the first being the a stat about infertility in general. Right out of the gate in the first paragraph it states that one in six couples trying to conceive a child are fighting against infertility according to the AFA (American Fertility Association), WoW that seems like a high number! Not surprising though, the rather more surprising stat that they shared was that about half of those one in six couples fighting infertility are facing the fight on the male side of things, half…..again WoW ![]()
The second thing in that PR that got my attention was the quote at the end with regards to the new male infertility causing genetic protein that stated “In addition to having an impact on fertility, the discovery identifies a new target for drug discovery for a much needed reversible male method of contraception,”. OK this is third and final WoW for this post, a possible new target market for a male contraception drug that would be reversible….. aaahhhh that illusive magic pill that all the drug makers are trying to find for men.
As nice as a male contraceptive drug would be or not be depending on what side of the fence you fall on with that issue. Can we stay on task here guys and find ways to work through our infertility issues and not get side tracked with your research by a potential discovery for a completely different issue! I’m just sayin
Again, male infertility is a factor for half of the one in six couples trying to have a baby, that’s not good.
