Infertility And The New Health Care Bill

Good day to you internet! I thought that today I would write about what I have read so far in terms of how infertility and health insurance have changed for the future now that the dust has started to settle from all the health care bill political fighting. The sweeping health care reform that is coming down the political road in 2014 looks to have some really positive changes when it comes to infertility but it also suffers from some major faults.

Since I am not the type of person that really enjoys writing about or focus on the negative for too long I thought I would just jump right into the negative at the beginning of this post so that I can hopefully end on the positive side. At least that is my intention as I sit here typing this today, let’s see where my random thoughts take me today ;-)

The biggest and most glaring omission from the ‘sweeping change’ of the health care bill from what I have read so far is the fact that insurance companies have been given a free pass to pretty much ignore the infertility issue altogether. Let’s be honest does anyone have an affordable insurance plan out there that will cover the average estimated cost of an IVF procedure? Don’t everybody raise their hands at once

It seems pretty clear to me at least that insurance companies don’t want to touch the cost of infertility. I could go on and on about how much money we spent over the years for failed IVF attempts as well as all the other ‘bells and whistles’ tests and procedures that they do on you. Like I said though I will try and not focus on the negative stuff for this post as I am sure we could all share some infertility horror stories when it comes to fighting with insurance companies over what is or is not covered by their plan.

So what you may be wondering would the be positive part of all this ‘sweeping change’ of the health insurance business and how it relates to infertility? Wait for it are you ready…… no more being denied coverage from a new insurance company because you have a pre-existing condition called infertility!

Wow isn’t that exciting so now if you have been labeled as in infertile man, woman or couple the insurance company can no longer refuse to give you insurance coverage. You know that insurance coverage that does not cover most of the cost of the IVF procedures that you will most likely be told that you need.

OK I admit it I have let that sarcastic side of me out of the writing bag for this post ;-) Seriously insurance companies do you not see the flashing signs on the walls of all the couples that are dealing with fight against infertility? The latest numbers off of the Resolve site puts that number of affected couples as over 7 million and climbing more every year. How much more proof do they need before they acknowledge the problem of infertility and start offering proper insurance coverage for it.

I am going to leave this post here for now before I start writing down other rabbit trails to different subjects or perspectives on this issue. By all means though if you have a different point of view please share them in the comments below and until the next time I write remember to keep up the fight and don’t let IF win!
