Basic Risk Factors Of Infertility

Today I felt that putting together a list of the more common risk factors that cause infertility. In my continuing efforts to supply the most infertility support information that I can find. Now I will grant you that those of us that have been dealing with infertility for a while that this will be a throw away post for you but if your a newbie to fighting infertility then pull up a chair grab a cup of coffee or whatever your favorite beverage is sit a spell as we go through some of those fertility risk factors.

First things first before we get to our list, what does the medical world in all it’s infinite wisdom define a risk factor to be? Good question and I am glad you asked it ;-) simply put it’s anything that can potentially increase your risk of  a symptom, condition or disease. So there you go, now that we have that out of the way let’s get on with that list of infertility risk factors.

The first one I am going to start with is one that only seems to increase the longer you fight with infertility and that is stress! Stress….. no good can come from you stressing out. Just like all the other physical things that stress can effect it will and does have a negative effect on your fertility.

OK here is an oldie but a goody (why is it ie for one and y for the other? :-D ) your age is a major factor and to say it simply time is not on your side. If you are a male the general consensus is that your sperm count starts to drop once you hit your 40’s and for the females your window starts to shrink even sooner than that. Most estimates that I have seen wager that a woman’s fertility starts to drop in her early 30’s.

The next one I am going to mention are actually a few rolled into one as far as I am concerned as they seem to go hand in hand. That is the obesity and lack of exercise factor, meaning if you are living a sedentary lifestyle….. no scratch that. If you are a couch potato that does not do any sort of exercise and more and more of us are in this society than you my friend have a big risk factor for infertility.  By the same token if you are an exercise addict and yes there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. If you exercise too much that can put unwarranted stress on your system which will be another risk factor for you.

OK let me put one more on the list that includes a few different but they all fall under the category of chemicals. What kind of chemicals you may be wondering well let’s break that down to and start with the two biggies and they are smoking and alcohol. Smoking is pretty much like stress as far as I am concerned in that no good can come from smoking so stay away at all costs. Alcohol on the other hand has a fine line that can be walked as I am sure most of us are aware by now is that an occasional glass of wine is actually good for you. Again there is a difference between an occasional glass of wine and going out for weekend benders…… not good for your fertility.

There are a few other forms of chemicals that can be a fertility issue for both men and women and those are metals, pesticides, solvents and herbicides. I know that covers pretty much everything that we are exposed to now a days as it seems they put some form of that stuff in everything we use now a days including our foods. Like I said just a few things to be concerned about
