The More Infertility Treatments The Less Your Chances?

That’s right you read that headline correctly according to a new study done by a few researchers at the University of California-San Francisco. Based on the infertility information that they gathered from 408 couples that made various infertility treatment attempts with varying degrees of success. The significant statistic that is being pointed out by most of the news media sources that I have seen this information is the stat that when infertile couples attempted the same fertility procedure multiple times that the odds of success decrease greatly with each attempt.

Now don’t get all down on that news as there did seem to be a silver lining to this recent infertility study. On the positive side of things the couples that had their fertility treatment procedures changed up after only two attempts saw a significant increase in their success rates :-D

Now that is good news but apparently as the way it is done normally when it comes to studies like these the news sources are posting their headlines pushing out the negative perspective. To be honest with you those of us that fight infertility really don’t need any help feeling the negative side of infertility as there is already plenty of that going around!

It would have been nice if I could have found the same article with a positive headline, I’m just saying….. I know I have gone on off the track on this post right about now. Time to step off my soap box about the negativity of today’s journalist. I use that term journalist very loosely by the way.

Anyway here is the link to the original article about ‘fertility treatments showing diminished returns’. Wow that headline just makes you want to click on over at read more bad news about how all your efforts to get pregnant with the help of fertility treatments is a loosing battle. Don’t give up hope though like I said if you take the time to read the entire article you will see that there is some really good news hidden in the post if you are willing to take the time to read through it ;-) As always keep fighting and don’t let IF win!

I think what the clinics are gathering from their data is a helpful tool for the consumer. Many see the cost of IVF and their wallets and health care plans scream at the cost of the therapy. So many opt for the lest costly IUI hoping that several attempts of this relitively low tech. procedure will work. Many with failed multiple IUI attempts have spent possibly one thousand dollars up to two or three thousand depending on what their pharmacutical needs where if any. If the cycle ends in failure the doctors know know what meds if any you responded to and that’s it. With IVF they are monitoring you like a hawk and they can hopefuly only have to have you go thru an egg stimulation cycle only once. IVF without the stimulation drugs is a few thousand dollars less then with the stimulation drugs, because all they are doing is implanting thawed embryos at that point.
For some the IVF means that two or more embryos are implanted in hopes that just one will make it.

At first when my RE suggested after some drastic weight loss that we consider IVF I was like why if my tubes are good? After doing further research on IUI I now see his reasoning because the clinic is able to stimulate the body to release more eggs you literally get more bang for your buck, but with that come consequenses like overstimulating your overies, and the chance that if they implant more then one embryo they all take and you have a multipule fetus gestation. At first when the doctor said IVF I was scared of turning out more babies then my husband and I could realisticly handle. But after doing a lot of reading on IVF and their hesitation by all clinics to implant more then two embryos I’m not so scared anymore. My husband thinks twins, even triplets would be a joy.(he came from a large family of 7 other siblings so that don’t phase him much).

We can also only hope that as more clinics look at SET or (single embryo transfer) that the sucess rate of that procedure increases and more clinics offer that to their patients as well.
