More and more young people are being diagnosed with cancer all the time which is a disturbing trend in itself. Add that to the fact that the main treatment for cancer patients is chemotherapy and radiation which in a lot of cases crushes the future odds of having a baby. In a lot of circumstances now a days it is a double blow to the person that not only do they have cancer but they will also loose their ability to have kids of their own in their future.
It’s really a cruel joke if you ask me, to tell a person that we can probably save you from the cancer but you will most likely not be able to have a baby anymore after the treatment. Thankfully there are some good common sense people out there that have seen a need and have stepped up to help those in need. There is a fertility clinic by the name of the Sher Institutes for Reproductive Medicine and they have on their own started a new program called the Fertility Rescue Program.
This is probably one of the coolest new fertility programs that I have heard of in a long time and I hope that it catches on with other places around the country. The concept is that after the cancer is removed and before the chemotherapy and radiation treatments begin the fertility docs go in on a 10 day process to collect as many eggs and embryos as they can and freeze them for future use and the best part of the whole program is that they are doing it for free!
